The Agnes Tilghman Lürman Photograph collection documents the activities of Ms. Lürman, and includes her visits to the “Grosses” also known as the Grosscoat Farm in Talbot County, Maryland, a trip to Paris, France in 1915, Shellfield, Wye Plantation, Weems, Virginia and Wharton Manor. Photographs also document the military service of William H. Decoursey Tilghman and J. Daniel Tilghman. Also, there is a comprehensive documentation of the National Service School Women’s Section of the Navy League at Camp Chevy Chase, 1917-1918. Concurrently Pat Calloway, a photographer stationed with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, 1917-1918, documented the sites in Paris, as well as the French landscape and daily life of a soldier during World War I.

Also documented through correspondence, legal records, and photographs are boarders who resided with the Humphreys and associated families including Mary Gordon Toadvine, Joseph and Mary Graham and John D. Joe Long was an American athlete, soldier, railroad worker, and politician born in 1921 in Delmar, Maryland. The Joe Long collection contains material compiled by Joe Long and his wife Mabel, who acted his campaign manager during campaigns. Materials included are newspapers, government bills, speeches, cards, letters, books, scrapbooks, and photographs compiled and saved by the Longs since the late 1930's.

Lester Laws papers

The Lester Laws papers consist of the records of Laws Construction Company and of the personal papers of Lester Laws and of his family from 1816 to 1994. The collection contains advertising, photographs, financial ledgers, correspondence, receipts and blueprints offering insight into the development of the infrastructure of the Delmarva Peninsula between 1920 and 1959. The company records include dozens of advertisements for construction equipment, tools and building materials and photographs of construction projects in progress. The collection also includes Lester Laws’ genealogy notes, and the personal papers of his daughter, Helen Laws Pomar. Pomar attended Salisbury State Teachers College, now Salisbury University, and served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. Her college score reports, military manuals, and copies of a post-newspaper from Camp White, Oregon, provide a glimpse into the educational and military experience of women in the 1930s and 1940s.

The Lieutenant Colonel Edward H. Bowes Collection documents the personal history of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Henry Bowes (1896-1944). Personal items relating to Edward Bowes’ career in the U.S. Army from 1919 to 1944 include diaries, photographs, and other service-related documents. Bowes’ wife Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee) and two children lived primarily in New York and San Francisco, California and are documented through photographs and other documents. Bowes was a prisoner of war (POW) in a Philippine Military Prison Camp during World War II and later died after his prisoner vessel was sunk. There are also two yearbooks, a photo album, a birth certificate of Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee), a handbook meant for cadets about the West Point Military Academy, and a copy of a telegram and record detailing Bowes’ death.

The Lynn Perry papers document his military service as an officer in the American Expeditionary Forces and a Lieutenant Corporal in World War II, as well as his personal interests in genealogy, the Mason-Dixon Boundary Line, and the Civil War with materials dating from 1880-1960, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1910-1945. Materials within the collection include his diary and a series of photographs from World War I, a World War II scrapbook documenting his work during a top secret mission in Alaska. In addition to the military service of Lynn Perry, his papers also include a scrapbook documenting Margaret Perry’s political career as President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women.

The Thomas Price collection consists of military and genealogical records accumulated by Thomas Price and dating from 1865 - 2001. It contains recordings and transcripts of interviews with three veterans of the First World War from Salisbury, Md. and records of the 115th Infantry Regiment of the Maryland Army National Guard. It also includes interviews, records, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into military service during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. The collection also contains photographs of Deal Island, Md. from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also includes photographs, publications, and ephemera offering insight into civic and religious life on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Anthony 'Tony' Sarbanes was an American athlete, scholar, educator, and soldier born in Salisbury, MD in 1937 to Greek immigrant parents. Sarbanes played basketball for Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), and later embarked on a long career as a coach for various Salisbury schools in basketball, golf, and soccer. After serving as a teacher for several years, Sarbanes served as Vice Principal for several Salisbury schools, eventually becoming Principal for Wicomico High School and the first Principal of Parkside High School.

The Vinson and Buck collection is made up of the personal papers and artifacts of the Buck family. The collection contains personal documents dating back to 1838 and includes the records and belongings of several families related to the Bucks, including: the Allens, the Gorrells, the Raudenbushes, the Klines, the Jennings and the Phillips. The bulk of the collection is made up of photographs that document Leonard Buck’s time in the military, the travels and home life of the Buck family, and local history. The Wayne Gilchrest papers span his political career from 1989-2008, with the majority of the material dating from 1996-2008. The records encompass his extensive political career and are documented through volumes of correspondence and his congressional voting record including his environmental work and activism; as well as his opposition to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Also of note are his trips as a member of the Congressional Delegation throughout the United States and the world.

The World War II Veterans project records document orally and written the histories of Wicomico County, Maryland men and women who served in the differing branches of the military during World War II. Written and audio evidence documents the veteran’s enlistment, rank, military unit, and where they were stationed for the duration of the war. Records were collected by Sylvia Bradley and the Westside Historical Society in 1995 with subsequent records periodically added in 1996.
